Photo @ Clean the World Facebook Earth Day may have come and gone, but our commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly practices lasts 365 days a year. We make every effort to limit our carbon footprint by following green hotel practices like responsible recycling and composting, using eco-friendly cleaning solutions, Energy Star appliances, LED lighting, Wind power, utilizing recycled paper for all printed material and by fostering a wonderful partnership with Clean the World Foundation for almost a decade. Most of us take the most basic necessities such as soap and water for granted, yet people all over the world suffer from disease and infections that could have been prevented with proper sanitation. In fact, pneumonia and diarrhea are the cause of death for an estimated 3.5 million kids under 5 each year globally, this is more than HIV and malaria combined. View this post on Instagram It's more than just recycling soap, it's about providing people in need with the basic tools to survive. Since proper handwashing can reduce child deaths by 50% or more, we are committed to our WASH education program that not only teaches, but provides soap. Having the ability to help that statistic is what motivates us this #MondayMotivation. #soapsaveslives A post shared by Clean the World (@clean_the_world) on Feb 18, 2019 at 7:00am PST Every day, hotels discard millions of pounds of soap and shampoo that impoverished people around the world could use to prevent disease, so Clean the World Foundation was formed to do something about it. The Grand Hotel in Salem is the first hotel in Oregon to partner with them and through this program, we have recycled thousands of pounds of unused soap products from guest rooms that would otherwise have ended up in landfills. The non-profit group works to prevent disease and improve sanitation by distributing recycled soap products and educational materials to domestic homeless shelters and impoverished countries worldwide. Soaps have been delivered to domestic shelters and more than 30 countries worldwide, such as Haiti, Pakistan, Armenia, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Uganda, Lesotho, and Swaziland. Through this program, nearly 9,000 pounds of unused soap products have been collected from our guest rooms which means almost 25,000 bars of soap and 7,000 hygiene products have been distributed to people in need all over the world. Clean the World has recycled 2,611 pounds of plastic from our hotel alone! Imagine what could be done if all hotels participated in this program. How does it work? The housekeeping staff at the Grand Hotel in Salem collects and saves the soap and shampoo not used by our guests and deposits them in bins provided by Clean the World. The products are shipped to a soap recycling plant where it is either re-batched or sterilized. The soap products are then delivered to domestic homeless shelters and impoverished countries suffering from high death rates due to acute respiratory infection and diarrheal disease.
