Bentley’s Grill Wine Steward, Brian Kemmerle, is passionate about providing our guests the very best wines in Oregon and will offer his experience and insight to help pair the perfect wine with your meal. This month, Brian discusses our featured wine, Chehalem 2007 3 Vineyard Pinot Noir.
I’ve been vigorously suggesting to the professional wine sales people for the last couple of months that Oregon Pinot Noir prices, especially for the winery’s Willamette Valley, entry level bottling, had gotten a little out of hand. I have some understanding of small winery economics and distributor markups however it had become difficult to sell, with any success, bottles of wine priced over $50 on the wine list. I figured if I wasn’t selling any, they weren’t either and something needed to change.
I tasted this wine 4 months ago when it was released and it was worth every penny of the $56 dollars I was charging for it when I put it on the list. However for the rest of the month the distributor has dropped the price so I can sell it for $50, roughly a 10% discount. So I decided that I would pass the savings on to you and make it available by the glass, $12.50 for a 6 ounce pour, available at least until September 3rd.
The wine is Chehalem 2007 3 Vineyard Pinot Noir. A blend of grapes from three estate vineyards: Ridgecrest, Stoller and Corral Creek. The wine displays strawberry and cranberry aromas with a hint of forest floor, smoked black tea and cardamom spice. This wine is light bodied, but not thin, and the substantial fruit acids on the finish lift the wine up and refresh the palate.

Join the Salem Chamber of Commerce at the Riverfront park this Friday, August 21st, 2009 from 11-2pm to celebrate 125 years of businesses that ROCK in Salem. Festivities will be held at the Riverfront Amphitheater. Cost is $5 per person. Kids under the age of 5 are free. The Flextones will be there performing hits from the 50′s, 60′s, 70′s and 80′s- Hamburgers and Hot Dog’s will be provided courtesy of NW Natural and Dessert will be provided by Roth’s Fresh Markets. Battle of the Businesses, Dunk Tanks, Jump Houses and the Carousel will all be available to enjoy. The event this year is presented by Maps Credit Union. First Generation sponsors are; NW Natural, PGE, Capitol Toyota/Scion and the Statesman Journal.
Donna Earley and I had a fabulous day yesterday! We went on a “field trip”- spending the day with some wonderful people on the North West Sustainability Tour, sponsored by Truitt Brothers of Salem, Oregon. People from all over the country came to Portland and Salem to see what Truitt Brothers and other businesses from the Willamette Valley are up to in their perceptive industires where sustainability is concerned.
The day started at University of Portland. Break-out sessions for the morning included “Communicating the Sustainability Message: How and Why, Methods and Benefits,” by Linda Duke, Duke Marketing, LLC and later ventured into discussions on; Marketing from the Menu, Waste Less, Save More, Energy Efficiency and Eco-Labels, and the Role of Social Media in Sustainability and Green Business. After lunch, everyone met at the Willamette Valley Blue Lake Green Bean Farm- learning about what it takes to grow green beans, harvest them, and the cycle they go through to eventually end up in a can at the Truitt Brothers cannery. Thank you Abisha Dunivin for a wonderful tour of the plant!
For Dinner, we met at the Willamette Valley Vineyards for a meal featuring sustainably sourced ingredients, pared by a glass (or two) of one of Oregon’s most famous Pinots!

The Phoenix Grand Hotel is expanding! On August 21, we will be opening The Grand Hotel at Bridgeport. Located in the Bridgeport Shopping District, The Grand Hotel at Bridgeport offers luxurious business class accommodations. Hotel features include complimentary covered parking, wireless and hard wired high speed internet throughout the hotel, hot breakfast buffet, exercise facility, and an indoor pool and jacuzzi.
We are just weeks from opening and the excitement is building! Below are a few images of our new logo, new signs on the building, and a sneak-preview of the lobby.
This is the logo that we will use most of the time, showing the Grand Hotel shield with script below. Advertising, signage, etc. will contain this logo.
From time to time we will use the shield alone, or the scrip alone. Freeway signage, for example, will likely display one or the other.
This picture shows the sign that faces north being installed. On two sides of the building the signage reads “The Grand Hotel”. These signs will be outlined with red lighting at night, and viewable from Interstate 5 northbound and southbound.

Local Event Raises Money for the Boys and Girls Club in Salem
This past weekend, The Bite of Salem, one of our favorite annual events in Salem, took place and was hosted by The South Salem Rotary . I am proud that The Phoenix Grand Hotel is an original and ongoing sponsor of the event. My children and I attended the event that took place at Salem’s Riverfront Park on two different occasions: Friday evening and Sunday afternoon. The weather was warm and sunny and perfect for the event. As you can see from the pictures, there are many different things to do at the event, from rides, great food and drink, to excellent music.
On Sunday we listened to a great local band, The Ty Curtis Band. The harmonica player, Hank, is truly amazing, as is Ty, the lead singer and guitar player. My daughter Jade, and son Parker, went on every ride as the event offers an unlimited ride wristband for the entire day. The food was also great, featuring many local favorites. Needless to say the kids loved the curly fries. One of the great things about this event is that 100% of the donations go directly to the Boys and Girls Club. We have been sponsoring this local event and will again next year. Come check it out next year!!!
July 29th, Bentley’s Grill featured Jim Bernau and Willamette Valley Vineyards during a spectacular wine dinner! The food and wine was specificly pared by Chef Derek Ridgway, Bentley’s Wine Steward Brian Kemmerle, and the staff at Willamette Valley Vineyards.
Menu options included Smoked Columbia Sturgeon, Thai Spiced Duck, SuDan Farm Oregon Lamb and Cheese from Willamette Valley Cheese Company. 50 people attended the event and fun was had by all!
Wine selection was a phonominal selection and included Pinot Gris 2007, Estate Chardonnay 2006, Elton Vineyards Pinot 2007, The Griffin 2001, Estate Pinot Noir 2000 and Pinot Noir Port 2005.
